A PAIR OF 'CLOBBERED' TULIPIERES

Of tall tapering form supported on square plinth bases, each with three sections of apertures to hold the blooms below a tall spire ending in a single aperture, the whole formed of two parts joined by a wooden pin, the obelisks decorated with floral sprigs and formal scrollwork, the bases showing scenes of putti frolicking in gardens, all done in Chinese underglaze blue and white then enamelled in Holland with green, iron-red and gilt

Lot Essay

Such tulipires were a tour de force of late 17th century Delft potters, who inspired the Kangxi blue and white examples. In this case the European owner was not content with his Chinese blue and white pieces but had them further enamelled after their arrival in Holland.
