Probably commissioned by Judith and Robert Lewis, nephew and wife of George Washington, whose death on 14 December 1799 apparently inspired three similar commemorative services. A pair of custard cups are at Winterthur (see A.M. Palmer, A Winterthur Guide to Chinese Export Porcelain, p. 132) and a platter is in the collection of the White House (see E. Gordon, Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain, p. 144).
