Lot Essay

Several services with this design were made for Philadelphia families. The Quaker girl Mary Hollingsworth Morris sketched the scene, possibly after a Dutch engraving. Her sketchbook survives at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington D.C. See J.G. Lee, Philadelphians and the China Trade, p. 73.
