Lot Essay

This interesting service, once associated with the illegitimate sons of King Joao V of Portugal, has now been attributed by N. de Castro (Chinese Porcelain and the Heraldry of the Empire, pp.149-50) to the Royal College of Nobles of Lisbon, a theory supported by M.A. Pinto de Matos (see Caminhos da Porcelana, Catalogue, p. 240). A plate from the service was sold Christie's, London, 16 November 1998, lot 465.
