The rectangular mirror with carved giltwood surround and cusped upper corners within tapering uprights surmounted by brass acorn finials above a flaring case fitted with three short drawers, on a conforming molded base with shaped pendant and straight bracket feet, one drawer with printed paper label

Lot Essay

Bearing the English portion of the earliest bilingual label used by John Elliott, Sr., this dressing mirror dates between 1753 and 1761, after his arrival from England and before his change of address to Walnut Street. A similar dressing mirror is in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg bears the label of his son, John Elliott, Jr. (1739-1810). The label reads, John Elliott, At [ ] looking Glass Store, the Sign of the Bell and Looking-Glass in Chestnut Street Philadelphia/Imports and Sells all sorts of English Looking-Glasses at the lowest []ares He also now Quicksilvers and frames on Glasses and supply's People with new Glass to their own Frames.
