Shown seated with right hand resting gracefully atop the raised right knee, the layered robes with foliate scroll borders loosely draped exposing his chest, also wearing shoes bound with raised cords, his face cast with gentle expression below short, wispy hair; together with a wood trestle bench, the apron carved with squirrels and grapevine

Lot Essay

A closely related lacquered bronze figure of a luohan dated to the Yuan dynasty, seated with one leg up and dressed in loose robes with similar soft drapery and gentle features, was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 26 and 27 April, 1998, lot 772.
