Lot Essay

The arms are those of William Richard, 3rd Earl Annesley (1772-1838).

The 3rd Earl served as M.P. for Downpatrick and Sheriff of co. Down. His 1803 marriage to Isabella, second daughter of William, 2nd Earl of Howth was later dissolved after she eloped with a sometime Lieutenant in the 10th Hussars. In 1828, he married Pricilla Cecilia, daughter of Hugh Moore, of Eglantine House.

The present tea urn shares characteristics with a number of design drawings for tea urns attributed to J. J. Boileau. A Paul Storr tea urn, 1814, illustrated in J. Bliss, The Jerome and Rita Gans Collection of English Silver, n.d., no. 39, pp. 118-21, shares a similar base, foot and spigot and general shape, but with differing winged monoped, key fret and leaf borders. A tea urn by Scott and Smith of 1806 is illustrated in J. B. Hawkins, The Al-Tajir Collection of Silver and Gold, Vol. 1, 1983, no. 28, pp. 100-01, shares a similar wavy gadrooned cover.
