Flowers are perennially in fashion, a motif that has captivated jewelry designers for over 200 years. In the twentieth century, Van Cleef & Arpels, excelled at transforming the beautiful flower into a work of art, recreating peonies, roses and camellias that seem almost life-like. The camellia is a native of Asia, brought to Europe by a Jesuit missionary at the end of the 17th century. It has waxy, rose-like flowers with many layered petals. This brooch is based on a camellia and, like the actual specimen, has three levels of petals arranged asymmetrically. Rows of yellow and white diamonds meander along the petals, guiding the eye around the brooch. The yellow diamonds are not only of superb individual quality but their color is perfectly matched. It is extremely rare, almost impossible, to find stones with such closely colored hues of this intensity.
