Moulded in relief with the Madonna standing before the Christ Child, her hands in an attitude of prayer, her halo inscribed 'AVE MARI(A) GRATI(A) P(LENA)', Christ seated on a cushion and holding aloft an orb in his right hand, a martyr's palm in his left, a rich garland of fruit suspended from rings in the background, a winged angel below at each end, within and integral frame of stiff leaf tips and a further green border

Lot Essay

The present relief is similar to marble and terracotta examples executed in Florence in the late 15th century in the workshops of early Renaissance masters such as Donatello, Benedetto da Maiano, Antonio Rossellino and the della Robbia.
