Lot Essay

The Antique marble original is two meters high and thought to be a copy executed during the Roman Empire of bronze originals of the Fourth century. It has been suggested that the sculpture was the work of Leochares, the same sculptor who could well be responsible for the Apollo Belvedere. It may have been his intention that the two statues be designed as companions.
