Lot Essay

These medallions are base on those by Count Feodor Petrovich Tolstoy (1783-1873), grandfather of legendary Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, author of War and Peace. He was appointed in 1810 as a designer of medals for the St. Petersburg Mint and was best known for his series of medallions commemorating the Russian campaign against Napoleon.
The medallions from the original series were sold Sotheby's London, 15 December 1995, lot 555 (2185).
