Painted with a young girl leading the blind general Belisarius to a grotto in a wooded mountainous landscape, a temple behind them on a hillside, within a gilt cisel band of stylised foliage divided by flowerheads, the richly gilt border reserved with sunflowers with gilt centres (minute wear to gilding)

Belisarius (c. AD 505-65) was a general under the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. He was falsely accused of conspiracy, his innocence later being established. According to legend, in old age he was a blind beggar on the streets of Byzantium.
