Cooke executed several views of the Isle of Wight, and the present picture shares a similar viewpoint to that illustrated in John Munday's catalogue raisonn, pl. 265. Munday now thinks that the present picture might be 58/2 in the catalogue, while pl. 265 actuallly represents 76/5. Interestingly, the picture was also owned by Alderman Salomans, the distinguished collector of Cooke's works, who also owned the preceding lot.

For an article on Cooke's Bonchurch views see Most Glorious Place, John Munday, Country Life, 17 May 1990, p. 215.
