Cooke executed several views of the Isle of Wight, and the present picture shares a similar viewpoint to that illustrated in John Munday's catalogue raisonn, pl. 265. Munday now thinks that the present picture might be 58/2 in the catalogue, while pl. 265 actuallly represents 76/5. Interestingly, the picture was also owned by Alderman Salomans, the distinguished collector of Cooke's works, who also owned the preceding lot.
