Lot Essay
In 1882 Davis sold the Chteau de la Barriere Rouge, near Boulogne, and simultaneously disposed of his house in St. John's Wood, which he had bought a number of years previously from Sir Edwin Landseer. He re-established himself in Radnorshire. It is probable that this picture predates this move, and on stylistic grounds, in its proximity to Pre-Raphaelite technique can be dated to the 1850s or 1860s.
