Forge Valley was a popular retreat near Scarborough.

In 1877, the year this picture was painted, Grimshaw's twins, Lancelot and Elaine, named after Tennyson's Idylls of the King were born in the town. The previous year Grimshaw had built a house there called 'Castle-by-the-Sea', possibly named after Longfellow's eponymous poem.
We are grateful to Alex Robertson for his help in preparing this and the following three catalogue entries.
