Lot Essay

Louis Victor Flatou (1820-1867), a Polish emigr art dealer, lived at 49 Porchester Terrace, London. Flatou purchased a number of pictures from Cooper in the early 1860's. He was a frequent visitor at Cooper's house, Vernon Holme, near Canterbury, together with his wife, for whom Cooper painted a small panel picture in 1863. Their friendship resulted in Flatou being Godfather to Cooper's son Nevill, (1864-1936), who was given the additional Christian name Louis after Flatou.
