Lot Essay

The present owner's father, David Gill, brother of the artist Colin Gill, was a great friend of the artist who lived nearby in a house called 'Parkhurst'. He kept Hitchens supplied with flowers for still life paintings, such as the poppies in the present work.

Hitchens' studio at Greenleaves was called 'The Gill-house' because it was made from an old Victorian greenhouse which Gill had removed from his own walled garden and given to Hitchens.
