Lot Essay

Sutherland adopted the imagery of the 'night bird' with raised wings on the right side of his cartoon for the Coventry Cathdral tapestry, Christ in Glory from 1957 (The Provost and Council of Coventry Cathedral) and the Trial Woven panel: St Matthew Symbol from 1958 (Lady Spence). (see D. Cooper, The Work of Graham Sutherland, London, 1962, nos.158,160).
