Lot Essay

Cecilia Green was the artist's favourite model. She sat for Flint between June 1953 and December 1966, and recalled of the present work 'The striped skirt was one of Sir William's favourite studio garments. Sitting with my back supported by a cushion was one of my favourite poses, so in this painting we were both happy'.
(private correspondence, 25 January 1991).
