Lot Essay

Ralph Lewis and Keith Gardner write of this watercolour, 'To W.R.F. such idyllic surroundings were Arcadian indeed. The whole idea of a pastoral paradise, an idealised rural retreat where nymphs and shepherds dwell in an atmosphere of romantic love, has appealed strongly to artists. Poussin, Watteau, Fragonard and many others have fallen under its spell, and Russell Flint was no exception' (R. Lewis & K.S. Gardner, Sir William Russell Flint, London, 1988, p.71 (illustrated and on the dust jacket).
