This drawing shows an old chapel in Newcastle-upon-Tyne located on the corner of Tyne Street and Horatio Street off City Road. Lowry visited the chapel on the recommendation of Mickey Marshall who with his wife Tilly ran The Stone Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. An oil painting of the same subject, dated 1965, is in the collection of Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. (see J. Horsley, L.S. Lowry in the North East, Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery Exhibition Catalogue, 1989, p.42).
