Lot Essay

Cosimo III of Medici (1642-1723) succeeded his father Ferdinando II as Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1670. He married Marguerite Louise of Orleans in 1661 and was made a canon of St Peter's, Rome, in 1700. He was the father-in-law of Ardin's sponsor Jan Wellem of Palatinate (see lot 12). Two other versions of this enamel are recorded. One is in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich (illustrated in H. Buchheit, Katalog der Miniaturbilder im Bayerischen Nationalmuseum, Munich, 1911, no. 327, pl. XIX and in K. Langedijk, The Portraits of the Medici, Florence, 1981, I, p. 609) and the other is in the National Gallery of Ireland (illustrated in A. Le Harivel, Illustrated Summary Catalogue of Drawings [...], Dublin, 1983, p. 3, no. 3660).
