Susan Dows Herter was the daughter of Dr. Christian Archibald Herter who was the son of the architect, Christian Herter of Herter Brothers. Adele Herter was married to Albert Herter, Christian's younger borther. The present work was executed circa 1911. A letter dated 11 April 1981 from Mrs. William Sergeant Kendall discussing this picture accompanies the lot.
