The first work, executed circa 1918, is accompanied by a group of preliminary studies for the the final image which is a portrait of fellow artist Eugene Arthur Jones. Milton Burns was a sailor-artist and sailed frequently to the Grand Banks and North Sea, doing illustrations for Harper's, London Graphic, Scribner's and other magazines. He was close friends with Winslow Homer, Frederick Remington and Edwin Austin Abbey.
