Lot Essay

Marianna Sloan was the sister of the famous artist, John Sloan. She is known for her murals, especially those in several churches in Pennsylvanian. The present work is inscribed with a partial line from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, no. 170: 'So when the angle of the darker drink/At last shall find you at the river-brink.'
