Chteau Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1865
Pauillac, 1er cru class.
Believed bottled by Thomson & Lander & Co., Leith. Wax capsule, slightly chipped. "Lafite" stencilled on bottle. No label. Level very top-shoulder
Tasting note: magnificent sturdy wines, more consistently reliable - if well cellared - than any other pre-phylloxera vintage. Lafite, tasted on six occasions. The first four, perfectly preserved, from Sir George Meyrick. The fifth, re-corked at the chteau in 1987, had correct depth but very mature colour; low-keyed but very good bouquet, sweet, fruity, meaty. Powerful, excellent flavour, length, firm tannin and acidity. At best ***** M.B. GVWBII
