Since 1910, Smith was an active member of the artist colony at Old Lyme. Most of his work, however, was destroyed in a fire in 1925. Artists of the Old Lyme Group admired Smith greatly and he was awarded several of the most prestigious exhibition prizes from the Association in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
