Lot Essay

Smith began to travel from New York to Old Lyme around 1905, staying at the Florence Griswold House and working in a studio across the brook from the Lyme Art Association. He became a charter member of the Old Lyme Association and later president. Throughout his career he received numerous awards from the National Academy of Design, Salmagundi Club and the Lyme Art Association.
