Lot Essay

The present drawing is probably based on a sketch by James Moore, who executed two studies of the Cathedral in 1792. Moore was Girtin's first patron; a wholesale linen draper and an enthusiastic topographer, he travelled around England between 1784 and 1794, gathering material for his collection and his topographical publications.

A watercolour by Dayes of this subject, also from the Girtin collection and dated 1794, is in the Yale Center of British Art, reference B1975.3.821.

We are grateful to Susan Morris for suggesting this watercolour also dates from 1794. A smaller watercolour of Okehampton Castle, also dated to 1794 and after James Moore, was sold at Christie's London, 8 June 1999, lot 29 (6,325).
