According to the Spink label attached to the reverse of the frame, each drawing was inscribed on the old mount which is no longer with the drawings: 'a squall Indian Ocean - painted April 1849' and 'a waterspout No. 26 No XVIII'.
Nicholl published an account of his tour in 1852, A Sketching Tour of Five Weeks in the Forest of Ceylon; Its Ruined Temples, Colossal Statues, Tanks, Dagabahs etc.
