Lot Essay

Khani, also known as Canea, is a province of Crete. In the early 1860s Lear lived on Corfu and visited Crete in 1864. A watercolour of Suda Bay is dated May 24, 1864 (see Edward Lear in Greece, exhibition catatalogue, 1971, p. 14, no. 65 illustrated p. 79).
