Lot Essay

William Merritt Chase established his famous Shinnecock Summer School of Art in 1891 that attracted numerous artists, among them Arthur B. Frost. In contrast to the current mode of Barbizon painting that was completed in the studio, Chase propagated in his Shinnecock school the aesthetic of plein-air painting. The present work was executed in 1891.
