Lot Essay

This watercolour is taken from an album of drawings by the artist, executed during the Winter of 1872.

Johnson was a pupil of William James Muller and accompanied him on his expedition to Lycia. He was also influenced by David Cox, Sen., whom he accompanied to North Wales in 1844.
