Finely enamelled en grisaille with a European town scene, depicting steps leading up to a pillory, a bridge over a canal and tall buildings, one showing a pulley on its outside wall, the rim with small landscape cartouches reserved on a dense gilt foliate ground, minute rim chip

Lot Essay

This design is after an engraving of circa 1685 by S. Le Clerc from a series entitled 'Diverses Suites de figures, chevaux et paysages pour l'instruction de M. le Duc de Bourgogne'. An idential soup-plate of this rare design is illustrated by F. and N. Hervout and Y. Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes Dcor Occidental, 1986, fig.15.52, p.358.
