Lot Essay

This painting, circa 1955-65, is typical of the woodland interiors which Kensett derived from A.B. Durand and the aesthetic of the Hudson River school. The even tonality of light is more in keeping with Hudson River paintings than with the Luminist pictures Kensett painted in the succeeding decade. The subject is either New England, or more likely New York state.
