An identical pair of portrait silhouettes of the Emperor Francis II (Francis I of Austria -- 1768-1835) and his wife, Empress Marie-Thrse (1772-1807), but laid on white marble gounds, is in the James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire (T. Hodgkinson, The James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, Sculpture, London, 1970, nos.44-45). As Hodgkinson concluded, the portraits probably date from 1792, when Francis I was appointed Emperor, as only then was he entitled to wear the insignia of Grand Master of the Order of Maria Theresa. Maria Theresa of Sicily was the Emperor's second wife, whom he married in 1790.
Another pair of medallions of this model, on white marble grounds, was sold from the Alexander Collection, Christie's New York, April 1999, lot 21 ($13,000), whilst a further pair, also on Bardiglio marble grounds was sold by the Executors of the late Lady de Trafford, Christie's London, 3 March 1994, lot 1 (9,900 pounds).
