The later eared mottled marble top with canted front corners above a fluted parquetry frieze and two drawers veneered sans traverse centered with a marquetry medallion of a house in the woods, flanked by parquetry diaper pattern panels, the side doors similarly decorated and each enclosing two shelves, the panels framed with double bead-and-reel mounts, the escutcheon in the form of ribbon-tied laurel draped medallions, the pilaster angles headed by guttae with ribbon-tied oak and acorns, on tapering fluted legs headed by guttae with brass caps, headed by guttae

With its distinctive semi-eliptical form and guttae-headed tapering legs inlaid with simulated flutes, this commode relates to a group of marquetry commodes by bnistes such as Jacques Birckl (matre in 1774, Martin Ohneberg (Iatre in 1773) and Charles Topino (matre in 1773). These include that signed by Birckl, sold anonymously at Christie's London, 9 June 1994, lot 66; a pair of commodes by Ohneberg sold anonymously at Christie's London, 17 May 1968, lot 48; and a matched pair formerly in the collection of Alice de Rothschild, sold Christie's New York, 23 October 1998, lot 166.
