To be included in the forthcoming Kees van Dongen catalogue raisonn being prepared by the Wildenstein Institute, Paris. This work is recorded in their archives under reference N-9306161667418.
Executed circa 1924 L'arrive Auteil is a carefully crafted work from a particularly exuberant period of Van Dongen's life. Having established himself as the leading avant-garde portrait painter in Paris, Van Dongen spent much of the 1920s enjoying the rewards of his success and indulging in the celebrated 'high life' of the so-called 'golden twenties'.
In its depiction of the climax of a race, as the horses cross the finishing post at the famous Auteil racetrack, L'arrive Auteil represents a typical 1920s scene from a day at the races. Men in trilby hats and workmen's caps throng around the side of the course while in the foreground an elegantly dressed couple in white stand apart from the crowd calmly observing the scene. With its bold sweeps of contrasting purple and green and its quickly executed brush strokes confidently shaping the hustle and bustle of the excited crowd, L'arrive Auteil is an elegant and stylish portrayal of a universally popular event.
