Lot Essay

To be included in the forthcoming Christo catalogue raisonn being prepared by Daniel Varenne, Geneva.

On 22 September 1985, a group of three hundred workers completed Christo's temporary work of art, The Pont Neuf Wrapped. The wrapping of the bridge added a new sculptural dimension to the Pont Neuf, which joins the left and right banks of the Seine and the Ile de la Cit, in Paris. In the words of the artist "When the Pont Neuf was wrapped, it could be considered a sculpture. But the bridge did still function as a bridge; the boats were passing underneath it, people were still crossing the river by using it. The work of art borrowed one of the most successful parts of urban design. And all the elements of this urban design, all these resources, became part of art perception."
