Lot Essay

The present bronze is a sketch for a figure on the Victory Arch of 1919 which was erected at Madison Square, NY to celebrate the armistace at the end of WWI. The arch, designed by the architect Thomas Hastings, and the sculptural program by Daniel Chester French, were made of staff (reinforced plaster) and therefore no longer exist.
