Lot Essay

The bow-knot, referred to in French as a "galant", evolved from the silk ribbons which trimmed the neckline and were pinned with jewelled clusters or crosses. The motif, which originated as a dress trimming, was executed in enamelled gold and gemstones, its form harmonises well with clothing.
