AN ENAMEL, DIAMOND AND RUBY SNAKE BRACELET, BY JULES CHAISE
Designed as two intertwined snakes, one enamelled blue with black markings, the other, in shades of green flecked with orange, each with a pav-set diamond head and ruby eyes, coiled round to the clasp, inscribed within "Napoleon III Eugenia de Montijo, Paris, XV-XI-MDCCCLII", the interior with scales indicated by engraving, circa 1850, with French assay mark (minor chips to the enamel)

Lot Essay

Although the significance of November 15th, 1852 for Napoleon III and the future Empress Eugnie is unknown, there is no doubt of the quality of this bracelet and the importance of its engraved provenance. It was made by Madame Janisset's principal supplier, Pierre-Jules Chaise (1807-1870), who was noted for his use of ribbon and snake motifs featuring supple and sinuous intertwined elements such as this.
