Lot Essay

According to Robert Boyle (1627-1691), there was a tradition that to find a horseshoe brought good luck. This belief continued well into the 19th century. "To keep away pixies and the evil eye" led to the adoption of the horseshoe as a lucky charm in jewellery - sometimes with a nail attached. The motif also appealed to sporting enthusiasts.
