While Schnackenburg (op. cit.) describes the present lot as a copy by Dusart after Adriaen van Ostade's study in the Pelletier Collection, it is known that Ostade often made several versions of the same composition, such as the watercolours dated 1677 of the same subject listed by Schnackenburg, op.cit., nos. 263-4. Cornelis Dusart inherited the material from the studio of his master Adriaen van Ostade, and is known to have reworked a large number of Ostade's studies. It would seem most likely that the present lot is a drawing by Ostade reworked in brown wash by Dusart.
