Lot Essay

Rottermondt was a member of the Guild in The Hague in 1639, and is known to have visited London in 1643 (J.G. van Gelder, 'P. Rottermondt in Engeland', Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek, I, The Hague, 1947, pp. 171-6). Presumably a member of the family of artists from The Hague, he was also a painter and printmaker. A comparable drawing was sold in these Rooms, 12 November 1990, lot 128. Among his other known drawings are two signed examples in the Printroom of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and one in the Albertina, Vienna (W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, 10, New York, 1992, pp. 5175-85, nos. 2288-2292x).
