Lot Essay

The ram in the upper left corner indicates that this is part of a series of the Months, of which Everdingen did at least seven, A.L. Davies, 'Allaert van Everdingen's Drawings of the Twelve Months', The Register of the Museum of Art, University of Kansas, 4, Kansas, 1972, no. 9. Davies mentions the series in the Museum of Art, University of Kansas; Muse Royale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; Petit Palais, Paris; Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin; and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. In their catalogue of drawings in the Amsterdam Historisches Museum, B. Broos and M. Schapelhouman, Nederlandse Tekenaars geboren tussen 1600 en 1660, Amsterdam/Zwolle, 1993, pp. 84-8, describe a further series, and mention the series in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow (inv. nos. 4759-4770). The present drawing, however, may be part of a series that was dispersed, of which eight others are in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam. A drawing of similar format sold as by a follower of Van Everdingen was sold at Sotheby's, London, 20 May 1995, lot 395.
