Lot Essay

While the artist is best known as an engraver of historical and topographical scenes (cf. lots 144 and 351, sold in these Rooms on 18 November 1985 and 24 November 1992 respectively), he also made a series of drawings depicting dwarfs of which the present lot is part; three others were sold in these Rooms, 13 November 1995, lot 205.
