Lot Essay

According to the artist's original inscription (verso), this is a view of the river Lek with the village of Capelle beyond. The later (autograph ?) alteration identifies the town as Schieland, while an inscription by another hand identifies the view as that of Krimpen on the IJssel. As the present view shows a castle to the left of the church, it may be identified as Capelle, since no such castle is known to have existed at Schieland or Krimpen.
