Van Kempen was established in 1789 by Johannes Mattheus van Kempen, who started a workshop in Utrecht which was continued by his heirs. In 1851 the firm provided several important objects for the exhibition of 1851 in the Chrystal Palace, london.
The mechanization of the production process in the 1850s forced the van Kempen's to move their factory from Utrecht to Voorschoten. In the next decennia van Kempen became the most important silver factory in The Netherlands.
Besides silver objects in a restrained classic style, the factory produced considerable quantities of well made Art Nouveau silver
