Each channelled overall and with a pierced shield-shaped back carved with foliage, with out-curved arms on downswept supports, the dished padded seats covered in close-nailed red leather, on square tapering legs headed by patera, on pinched and tapering square feet (2)

Lot Essay

This pattern of arched back chair, described as 'camel back', features in the late 1780s Estimate Sketch Books of Gillows of London & Lancaster (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 260).

A set of ten dining-chairs of similar design comprising seven George III single chairs, a single chair of later date and a pair of similar open armchairs were sold anonymously in these Rooms, 12 November 1998, lot 24.
